Zayne giving Dancer a "Pre-show Pep Talk"...

I don’t really have any good photos to post.  I am going to post photos…LOTS of photos…but none of them are particularly good or very interesting…

What they are is a bunch of photos I took of my 4 year old daughter, Zayne, riding in her very first Horse Show.  She’s been riding for about a month, once a week.  Maybe 4 or 5 times total on this mini horse “Dancer”, but I’m told by my friend, Lori, her teacher, that she has a “natural seat”.  I don’t know what that means, really…but I can make a reasonable guess that it means she has picked it up quickly and is doing well…

Anyhow…we get to the show, and it’s a whole lot of waiting.  Really, that’s fine by Zayne, as long as she gets to play with and practice riding Dancer…she really doesn’t care about much else…

That's her "game face". Yea...she's still smiling no matter how hard she tries not to...

We found out that there are a LOT of kids in her class this year.  She is showing in the “Lead Line-Equination” class, which is typically kids on horses or ponies in full dress, being led by an adult.  The riders are judged on their poise, posture, control, and overall skill level.

Most of the other kids in this show grew up with and around horses.  Their parents grew up with and around horses.  They were everything but born on a horse.  We didn’t expect a whole lot from Zayne…just have fun.  The smile on her face is absolutely genuine.

They walked the horses around the ring a few times, than trotted around the ring.  Then they turned around and came back the other direction.  It was really cool watching her ride and just seeing her be so happy.

We knew that this class had 2 “competitions”.  The main competition was the Equination, which I explained earlier.  The other is the “Pleasure Class”.  Basically, it’s a gimme.  All the kids are asked who is having the most fun, and who wants to be a cowboy or cowgirl, and then they are told that everyone is wonderful, and they all get a first place ribbon.

"Who wants to be a Cowgirl?"

"Who wants to be a Cowgirl?"

But the part that shocked me, and everyone else the most…SHE WON SECOND PLACE!  She actually took second place in the “Equination Class”, against some very stiff and deserving competition.  NOT what we expected!!

By the way…In the end, Zayne said that “Dancer can have the blue ribbon, because she was the best horse.”  And that was just fine by everyone involved…

If you’ve wallowed through this post, and made it this far…thanks for sticking around and listening to the rant of a very, VERY proud father!!
