The Morning After…

What.  A.  Week.  !!!

It started snowing, as scheduled late Sunday afternoon…the storm pretty much followed John and I down 395 from Mono Lake last week.  And I knew by looking at it that this one was gonna be big, and it didn’t disappoint.  And it stuck around all week.

This morning…the fog settled in as the clouds began to break up…

But, as per normal, it warmed up, cleared up, and a good lot of the snow was gone by this afternoon.  But the lingering clouds were still hanging in there…

Even the vacant lot on the side looks pretty with a fresh blanket of snow and the right sky…

Thanks for taking the time to look!!

Went for a Walk…

Got off work a little earlier than expected yesterday, so I grabbed my camera and went for a walk.

Now…you know I didn’t walk around all afternoon without stopping to say hi to my new friend, the Curious Pony…

Of course…it just wouldn’t be right if I only shared a color profile of Curious Pony…

After that, I went down into town.  There was nothing going on in town.  It was kinda cold, and grey and gloomy, and there just wasn’t many interesting people walking around.  So I went to the Bean for a cuppa Joe.

While sitting there drinking my Caramel White Mocha, no whipped cream, I noticed a really neat thing that happens here every once in a while…

Wave Breaking Over Bishop

We get these cool cloud formations around here known as “Sierra Waves”.  Just these really pretty wave-shaped clouds that form.  I happened to look up and catch this Sierra Wave as it started to break up over Main St…

Thanks for stopping by!

Another Day at the Ranch

So…the sky was just unbelievable this afternoon.  I mean…waves of clouds, just roiling, rolling and folding themselves on top of each other.  And a HUGE ceiling…WAY over the mountains.  I couldn’t resist walking down to the ranch for some shots…

Grazing

Actually, there are several horses and a couple ponies at this ranch, and ALL of them are incredibly friendly towards people.  I had a hard time getting landscape shots because the ponies kept coming over and nosing the tripod while I was trying to shoot.

Curious Pony

Maybe I’ll get a friend or my daughter to come down there with me…occupy the horses while I get some shots…  That’s not a bad idea…

Thanks for taking the time to look, and as always, comments are much appreciated!

Grazing at Sunset

So…I had a date for dinner last night with Annette, and we were supposed to meet at the restaurant at 4:30.  I walked outside at about 20 minutes past four, and the sky was simply fantastic.  I looked at my watch, sighed, and got in my truck to go to dinner.  While waiting for my truck to warm up, the sky just got better and better…

So…I ran inside, grabbed my camera and a couple GND filters, and ran back to the truck.  The tripod was already in the truck.  I drove down to the end of the road, thinking I *might* be able to get a shot of the ranch before I was late enough to make people angry…

Sunset Grazing

Boy am I glad I did.  I had just enough time to set up the tripod, put on the filters, and snap an exposure.  I jumped in the car just as my phone rang with a new text message.  “Where are you?”  I texted back “Be right there”.  I was one minute late.  Hell, I’m usually later when I’m NOT trying to get “the shot”…

Thanks for taking the time to look!!

Zayne giving Dancer a "Pre-show Pep Talk"...

Zayne giving Dancer a "Pre-show Pep Talk"...

I don’t really have any good photos to post.  I am going to post photos…LOTS of photos…but none of them are particularly good or very interesting…

What they are is a bunch of photos I took of my 4 year old daughter, Zayne, riding in her very first Horse Show.  She’s been riding for about a month, once a week.  Maybe 4 or 5 times total on this mini horse “Dancer”, but I’m told by my friend, Lori, her teacher, that she has a “natural seat”.  I don’t know what that means, really…but I can make a reasonable guess that it means she has picked it up quickly and is doing well…

Anyhow…we get to the show, and it’s a whole lot of waiting.  Really, that’s fine by Zayne, as long as she gets to play with and practice riding Dancer…she really doesn’t care about much else…

That's her "game face". Yea...she's still smiling no matter how hard she tries not to...

We found out that there are a LOT of kids in her class this year.  She is showing in the “Lead Line-Equination” class, which is typically kids on horses or ponies in full dress, being led by an adult.  The riders are judged on their poise, posture, control, and overall skill level.

Most of the other kids in this show grew up with and around horses.  Their parents grew up with and around horses.  They were everything but born on a horse.  We didn’t expect a whole lot from Zayne…just have fun.  The smile on her face is absolutely genuine.

They walked the horses around the ring a few times, than trotted around the ring.  Then they turned around and came back the other direction.  It was really cool watching her ride and just seeing her be so happy.

We knew that this class had 2 “competitions”.  The main competition was the Equination, which I explained earlier.  The other is the “Pleasure Class”.  Basically, it’s a gimme.  All the kids are asked who is having the most fun, and who wants to be a cowboy or cowgirl, and then they are told that everyone is wonderful, and they all get a first place ribbon.

"Who wants to be a Cowgirl?"

"Who wants to be a Cowgirl?"

But the part that shocked me, and everyone else the most…SHE WON SECOND PLACE!  She actually took second place in the “Equination Class”, against some very stiff and deserving competition.  NOT what we expected!!

By the way…In the end, Zayne said that “Dancer can have the blue ribbon, because she was the best horse.”  And that was just fine by everyone involved…

If you’ve wallowed through this post, and made it this far…thanks for sticking around and listening to the rant of a very, VERY proud father!!
