Pre-Dawn Photo Shoot

I woke up at around 4:00 this morning, made a pot of coffee, and looked outside.  I had my alarm set for 5:30, because I wanted to catch the sunrise at Klondike Lake.  I went outside with a cuppa Joe, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.  But there was a TON of stars, and a really nice, bright waning moon.

So I grabbed my gear and headed out an hour earlier than planned.  I got to Klondike Lake at around 5:30…just about the time I was expecting to roll out of bed.  Boy am I glad I did…

It was another gloriously still, but crisp and cold morning.  Perfect for long exposures…AND long underwear…

Thanks for coming along!

Blue Moon for 2009

Every few years, there is a lunar phenomenon known as the Blue Moon.  It is an “extra” full moon phase.  For 2009, this occurred on December 31.  Happy New Year!

Blue Moon and Christmas Lights

I love getting night shots.  It’s even better with awesome clouds, a Blue Moon, and Christmas lights…

Thanks for taking the time to look!!

Sunset Silouhettes

Wow.  I caught the sunset tonight and it was pretty darn spectacular.

At first, when the sun was just barely behind the mountains, it wasn’t giving any color, except a blinding yellow and white burst that reflected off the clouds.  So turned around and shot the moon rising up over the Whites…

When it finally dipped below the horizon and started throwing some color up into the clouds, it was still so bright that I simply could not expose for the mountains.  I simply didn’t have enough filters to stop down the sky.

So…I switched gears and set up for deep silhouettes…

I’ve never really been successful with silhouettes in the past.  I’m starting to think now that maybe I was just trying at the wrong times…

Very Angry Gophersnake

I have never seen a more defensive and angry gophersnake than this one.  He was about 3 1/2 to 4′ in length, and had more attitude than any other gophersnake I’ve ever dealt with.  In the pictures, you can see that he is raised right up off the ground in a strike pose, which is not at all uncommon.  However, while maintaining this position, this little bugger was managing to crawl forwards, directly towards me, and striking at the same time.  It was really neat to watch.

At least when they are this defensive it usualy makes for some decent photos.  I love it when they flatten their heads and puff up and pose…

Also had a lovely moonrise last night…

Of course, it’s nearly impossible to drive around in my town without seeing at least one decent landscape shot.  So here are two for you…

Fourth of July

Went to watch the fireworks with a friend last night and had a really good time.  I live in a small town, with a small budget, so…really the fireworks sucked.  They suck every year.  The town simply can’t afford the big, fancy, expensive fireworks, but…they try.  And every year is a good time…if you avoid spending the $20 to park at the airport.

Me?  I spend the $20 on a 6-pack of good beer, and hit the dirt roads behind the airport. Closer to the action, excellent view, and my money is better spent.  Seems like a no-brainer to me…

Anyhow…here’s a couple pictures from last night…

The girl I was with was very curious about snakes, and she knows I am a bit of a snake lover.  As the fireworks started, around 9pm, she asked if there were snakes where we were.  I told her that around 10pm, if we were to drive down a closeby road, I would bet money we would find a sidewinder.  Sure enough…as we left the dirt road and hit the pavement, right on schedule at 10pm, there was a young sidewinder in the road.  I didn’t get any pictures of it, simply because my friend was really enjoying just loking at it and watching it.  It was pretty cool…

Anyhow…thanks for checking out the blog again!

Another Day, Another Desert

I went back down to the Alabama hills today to play around in the desert for a couple hours.  The wind was horrible, whipping through at 50-60mph.  There weren’t any critters about, but it was a nice, warm, bright sunny day, so I walked around through the rocks, and took some pictures.  Hope you enjoy seeing them as much as I enjoyed taking them!

This next one isn’t the best picture, but it’s pretty cool how the snow is drifting off the peak.  The wind is probably pushing 120mph up there.

Walk in the Desert

Went for a nice long afternoon stroll through the desert today.  Saw loads of lizards and landscapes.  Here’s a few selected shots from the day…
